Do you know how to safely prepare your chicken before you eat it? Raw chicken carries bacteria that are harmful to human health.
Here are a few tips to keep you and your family in good health as you enjoy your delicious chicken dishes!
- Thaw frozen poultry in your refrigerator or in cold water, not on the countertop.
- Don't rinse raw poultry in your sink. It will not remove the bacteria, but the raw juices will spread it into your sink and onto your countertops.
- Bacteria in raw poultry can only be killed when cooked to at least 165 °F internal temperature, as measured with a food thermometer.
- Poultry products should ALWAYS be cooked thoroughly. Unlike beef, there is no safe "rare" or "medium rare" option for poultry.
